Robert Jensen: Introduction

Robert Jensen

photo from

Robert Jensen is a leading figure in the scholarly debate over racial, gender, and social issues, including white privilege, pornography, and the role of America in the world.  He is a professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin where he teaches courses on media law, ethics, and politics; and he is a prolific writer in both the academic and journalistic press.

His research interests include institutionalized racism and white privilege, feminism (especially as relates to pornography, sexual violence, and the construction of masculinity), journalism, and the furthering of progressive political goals through the use of media.  Some of these views have made Jensen a figure of significant controversy, especially his writings on America’s moral standing, its military actions, and its place in the world.  The significance of his views has resulted in a number of theorists whose writings work to build on or refute Jensen’s positions.

Dr. Jensen will speak at IU East on the topic of "Power and Politics in the Age of Obama: Is the United States Post-Racial?" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16th, in Vivian Auditorium. Tickets for the event can be obtained at the Bursar’s Office.  Admission is free.

Dr. Jensen will also conduct several teaching sessions on October 16th and 17th at IU East and in the Richmond community focused on how to recognize and address hidden racism.  Additionally, he will run a workshop for students based on his book “The Heart of Whiteness”.
