M300-Course Information

Course Description: This course is designed to examine teaching effectiveness and excellence related to teaching in a pluralistic society. Academic success is increasingly tied to diversity issues; hence studying the nature of culture, individual differences among students, and issues related to cultural pluralism such as religion, gender and socio-economic status are critical.  Understanding what it means to be a culturally competent teacher, knowing how to integrate multicultural education throughout the curriculum, and being able to identify classroom teaching strategies which respond positively to the personal and ethnic diversity of learners are each components of being a reflective scholar, instructional leader and global citizen.

Course Rationale: When you become a teacher, you make the commitment to teach ALL students. The rationale behind this course is to better prepare you to fulfill that commitment and to help you understand the personal and societal obstacles that might interfere with your ability to do so.  Awareness and education are the first two, crucial steps towards empowering yourself to be the best possible teacher for all students.

Pluralism in Teaching

"Washing one's hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral. "

Introduction to Research

Introducing You to Research is a powerpoint presentation that explains in detail the many ways to find & understand library information.

Best Practices for using Campus Library E-Resources

To avoid access problems from off-campus review the list below:

  • Create a new web browser page or window and begin on the library's website- http://iue.edu/library or http://iue.libguides.com.
  • Do not begin a library search from OneStart or Oncourse.
  • As you enter a database, you will be asked to enter your userid and passphrase/word.  The IU East IT department provides this service.  To get to some full-text resources this must be completed.  Example of screen below.
  •
  • If you do not see the login page, close everything, if possible, and try again.
  • Report access problems to Sue McFadden or contact by telephone at 765-973-8325.
